One Million Stars to End Violence is a global weaving that has inspired individuals, groups and communities to weave stars to inspire light, hope and peace in the world. We are inspired by Ms Maryann Talia Pau, the founder of One Million Stars to End Violence Project to continue her good work in encouraging everyone to end violence. She started this creative movement in 2012 and encouraged everyone and any community from all over Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific, Europe and The United States of America to weave stars and weave and contribute the stars to the One Million Stars to End Violence project. The project’s aim was achieved in Mar 2017 and the one million stars would be displayed in Queensland museum in March 2018.

Here’s a beautiful quote from Dr Martin Luther King Junior mentioned in Ms Maryann’s message to the Ballarat Weave 100 Community. It reads “Returning hate for hate only multiply hate; adding more darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that”. She shared that “even though there is so much despair about in this world, even though there is so much brokenness and violence on our streets, in our homes, in our workplaces and schools and even in places we are meant to feel safe, there is still hope”.

We are so inspired by her message to give hope, to give strength and to do good and do something positive. We are inspired to spread her good work and message to everyone here in Ipoh and in Malaysia. We encourage all of us to weave stars which symbolizes light, courage, love, kindness, solidarity to end all forms of violence, be it physical or mental.

Star weaving is a mindful, joyful and creative practice which allows us to come together, to chat and to bond, to make new friends or just to have some time out and learn something new and create something beautiful. One can also be inspired to get involved with the Community and reduce isolation and feel belonged. It is also a way we all can practise kindness in our personal relationships, our workplaces, neighbourhoods and communities and empower ourselves so that we can create a more peaceful world and in turn end violence.

We choose to target one million stars because it demonstrates how monumental the work of creating a safe and peaceful space for women and children, be it here in our Community, or around the world. It reminds us that every one of us can do something, however small or big, to ensure that others feel ok, safe and loved. One person can’t work to end all violence in the Community. Many groups and various communities, young and old, are needed to work together, and come together to weave stars to support our Cause to stop violence against women and children.

We invite you to weave stars, big or small, using whatever papers you have, be it ribbons, newspapers, magazines, or even old school books. We invite you to form your own star weaving communities with your friends, family, colleagues and together let’s weave a million stars. We know it sounds impossible to weave one million stars in a short time, but let it not stop us from trying. Let us remember that each star you make, it represents your desire to end violence too. Each star you weave brings hope. To the weaver, each star tells his or her own personal story. Each star is a statement that he or she wants to make this world a better place for each and every one of us. Each star we weave may be for forgiveness and for healing. Each one of us believes that peace and kindness in this world is possible.

Let us all come together to achieve this mission of making one million stars to end violence. Let us go out and spread the message of anti-violence, peace, love and kindness.

We have organized a few gatherings for us to come together to weave the stars. To those of you who could join us, please do. Please bring along your friends, friends of friends, family members, anyone who believes that stars are our symbol of light and love. To those who have the resource to donate ribbons or can help to cut the strips, we appreciate your kind donation.

Overall, we hope that the sight of one million stars shows just how much we can achieve when we work together to create change and that it inspires hope, pride and belonging in our communities.
